I try to spend as little time cleaning the kitchen as possible. I also don’t put pots and pans in the dishwasher so a good scrubby yarn dishcloth is in order! Whip up a Two-Sided Scrubby Dishcloth using this free crochet pattern to make kitchen clean up time go faster.

Don’t you love a good crocheted washcloth? I like to make washcloths when playing around with new crochet stitches. Not only do you learn the crochet stitch but you ALSO have something useful at the end. I use smaller ones as little plant coasters to brighten up my plant spaces.

Single crochet through both edges (scrubby and cotton) around entire square, placing 2 single crochets in each corner to avoid curling.

Note that when working your way down the sides of the dishcloths, be sure not to place too many stitches. Just space them evenly; one stitch per row end.

When you get around the entire square, fasten off leaving a ~12″ tail. Join using the Invisible Join method.

Using your yarn needle, feed the yarn through as close to the center of the dishcloth as you can.

Now we will make a little “X” in the center of both dishcloths so that the scrubby and cotton can not separate. Just sew a little X, then feed through it back through to the cotton side.

Securely weave in all ends. That’s it!

You should be able to get several complete two-sided scrubby dishcloths from one skein of each yarn. Isn’t that great?!

Whether you are gifting this two-sided scrubby dishcloth to a friend, a new neighbor, you are selling these at a craft fair, or using them yourself, I hope you love them! They are so quick to crochet, and easy too! Almost makes me want to go clean something. Almost. 😉

If you decide that the scrubby yarn is painful you can try wearing a glove on that hand. Or, you could follow the same pattern as above but hold the two yarn strands together instead of making two separate cloths. This is what that looks like:

I love that too! Which version will you make?

    1. Hi Tina! You will need both regular cotton for one side and the scrubby for the other side of the dishcloth.

  7. Thank you for the super easy tutorial! My dishcloth turned out great and I love the lemon peel stitch! My only struggle was crocheting with the scrubby yarn. That stuff was stiff and it was hard to really see what I was doing. I got mine from Michael’s but I don’t remember the brand. Maybe yours from Hobby Lobby is better?
    1. Hi Krissy! The scrubby yarn can be tricky to crochet with. You can try doing the scrubby side in HDC..the stitches will be easier to find and work into. Hope that helps!
  8. In stead of making the two layers separately, would it work to make one layer with two strands of yarn, one of the cotton and one of the scrubbie yarn? I think I'll give it a try.
  9. Just finished my first one of these and absolutely love the results! Only adjustment was I went up a hook size for the cotton yarn to accommodate the loose gauge I got with the scrubby yarn and it worked out perfectly. I’m sure I’ll be making more of these. Thanks for the pattern :)
  10. So excited to try this. I give dishcloths every year to my co-workers as part of their Christmas gifts. They are going to love this addition. Thanks for all that you do Ashlea.
