“Ask Your Dad”
To add the phrase “ask your dad” you could…
1. Use the contrasting yarn color and top stitch the text. For this you’ll just slip stitch into the fabric to form the letters. It would be smart to lightly draw with a pencil to mark where you will place your top stitches.
2. Use embroidery floss if you are familiar with cross stitch – me not so much. Ha!
3. Try Fabric Paint in pen form. This works well, but you’ll definitely want to test your hand on a scrap piece before writing on the real deal. You could channel your inner Bob Ross and paint a happy little tree, or a bird, flower… you get the idea. Let the fabric paint dry for at least 4 hours.
4. Use Heat Transfer Vinyl. This was actually my husband’s idea and I only agreed because we are using 100% cotton. DO NOT USE Heat Transfer Vinyl with acrylic yarn as it will melt! I must say that Paul’s idea was rock solid, and it turned out so awesome! This Heat Transfer Vinyl decal is about 6″ wide and 2″ tall, should you choose to make your own. If you do not have a vinyl cutting machine, purchase a decal here in black, burgundy, or turquoise.

After you’ve added your text, its time to pull the whole thing together!
Construction of sleep mask:
Lay the completed mask onto the felt square, trace around and carefully cut.

Position elastic ends in between the two layers without twisting: the crochet sleep mask and the felt. Once positioned, thoroughly sew the elastic onto the yarn portion of the sleep mask, making sure it is very secure.

Replace the felt and prepare to sew around entire mask.

Insert sewing needle from the “inside” of the sleep mask (in between the masks to hide your knot), then sew over one stitch’s width, up into the crochet border row, then back down through the next stitch.

Continue sewing around entire piece. Secure thread with a knot, feed thread through a bit and trim. Voila! Now, in order to show Paul what photos/angles I wanted, I had him model the mask for me first. What a sweetie! Ha!!!

Isn’t this crochet sleep mask just too funny? Perfect for any mother this Mother’s Day, and I’m sure would be a great seller at a craft fair if you’ve got one coming up!
