SIZE 4/5T BLANKET CARDIGAN PATTERN:

Row 1: Fhdc-108 (or ch-109 and hdc in 2nd st and in each across) (108)
Rows 2 – 40: Ch-1, hdc in each st to end (108)

Use stitch markers and mark 38 sts in from each side to start armholes.

Right side
Row 41: Ch-1, turn, hdc in next 38 sts (38)
Rows 42 – 56: Ch-1, hdc in each st to end (38)
Fasten off and weave in end.

Center/back
Attach yarn in next open st.
Row 41: Ch-1, in same and next 31 sts. (32)
Row 42 – 56: Ch-1, hdc in each st to end (32)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Left side
Attach yarn in next open st.
Row 41: Ch-1, hdc in same and in each st to end (38)
Rows 42 – 56: Ch-1, hdc in each st to end (38)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

SEW SHOULDERS:
Fold front sides in and line up the edges of the top to sew the shoulder using the Mattress Stitch. Starting at the outside, sew front to back for 8 sts on each side. This will leave 30 unsewn stitches on both fronts and 16 unsewn stitches along the neck for a total of 76 stitches.

COLLAR:
Attach yarn at what would be the right lapel. We will work our way to the shoulder, across the neck and around to the other side, continuing in rows. If you’ve made the Painted Canyon Cardigan for kids, the concept is the same!

Row 1: Ch-1, hdc in next 30 sts, hdc2tog (in the same 2 sts as shoulder seam) hdc in next 16 sts, hdc2tog (in the same 2 sts as shoulder seam) hdc in next 30 sts (78)

Row 8: Ch-1, turn, hdc in next 3 sts, ch-2, sk 2 sts, hdc in next 68 sts, ch-2, sk 2 sts. Hdc in last 3 sts. (78)
Rows 9 – 10: Ch-1, hdc in each st to end. (78)

Round 1: Ch-1, hdc in same st and evenly around armhole. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (32)

Rounds 2 – 3: Ch-1, turn, hdc in same st as join and each st around. (32)

Round 4: Ch-1, turn, sk very first st and hdc in each st around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (31)

Round 34: Ch-1, turn, bphdc around first, fphdc around next. Repeat around, bphdc around last. Join to top of first bphdc with sl st. (23)

Rounds 35 – 36: Repeat rows 33 & 34

Round 37: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st around. Join using Invisible Join.

Weave in all of your ends throughout the cardigan. If you’d like to add fringe, read on!

FRINGE:

Using a hardcover book about 10” tall, wind yarn around and around. When you run out of yarn, or you get a decent amount wrapped as pictured, simply cut the yarn at both ends of the book. This will give you a pile of yarn about 9” long that will turn into about 4” long fringe when halved.

Separate the fringe into bundles, using about 4 – 5 strands per bundle. Fasten the bundles every 5 rows up the front of the cardigan; right side, left side, or both!

BUTTONS:

Sew the right shoulder button on the inside, and left shoulder button on the outside (or visa versa). I highly recommend testing button placement by “pinning” up each side using stitch markers. Place buttons at the shoulder seam and on the first row of the collar. Try to weave in a few stitches in each direction so that all of the weight is more evenly distributed instead of just hanging on one stitch.

  1. How long in inches is the finished product from top to bottom? I know I’m a tight crocheter but I went up a hook size and it’s still so tiny. I should have done a gauge but I can’t believe I’m off this much.
