Have you ever wanted a cosmetics bag that safely holds your items, but also lays flat when needed? This drawstring cosmetics bag crochet pattern is designed to do exactly that.
Drawstring Cosmetics Bag Free Crochet Pattern
This is the 10th installment of the 2021 Household Crochet Series. We’ve had some pretty amazing patterns so far, and I think this may be one of my top three in the series. 🤩
You could, of course, use your drawstring bag to store other things around the house, but I am most excited about using this when travelling. Go ahead and lay it allllll out there, in a way that you can see E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G at once. Then when you’re finished getting ready for your day, simply pull the drawstring on either side of the circle to cinch it up again. GENIUS!!
I do tie a small knot in mine to keep it from opening back up.
We are making the drawstring almost exactly the same size as the circumference of the bag so that we can connect the two ends and there are no loose strings hanging.
If you need a cosmetics bag for traveling, or for just keeping your countertop clutter-free, this free crochet pattern is for you!
This would also be great for college kids living in a dorm! 😀
Materials:
Dishie Cotton (100% cotton, worsted weight) in “Ash” colorway shown
-approx. 360 yards
6″ Plastic Canvas disc
-optional but really offers good support to the bottom of the bag!
Crochet hook in size G/4mm
Lucet Fork
-again, this is optional but making the cord at the end goes so much faster with it!
I will have a tutorial soon for how to use a lucet fork. There is a learning curve but like with all things worth knowing, it’s worth knowing! 😉
Pattern Notes:
Pattern written using US terms.
In the rounds that have a chain at the beginning, the chain does NOT count as a stitch.
In the bag body, make sure to use a stitch marker to note the first stitch of the round, as we will be working in a continuous spiral with no joining or turning.
We are using double crochet for the bag bottom.
We are using Linked Double Crochet for the bag body. (Tutorial here)
The Linked Double Crochet stitch is great for this pattern because the stitches are connected in a way that prevents the small things (like skinny eyeliner) from poking through and potentially getting lost. We can’t be having that!

Round 7: Ch-2, turn, crocheting through both circles, * Ldc in next 5 sts, 2Ldc in next * repeat between * * around. Do not join, work in a spiral without turning for remainder of pattern. Use stitch marker to note first st of each row. (84)

Round 21: Lhdc in next (to even out the height difference between the Ldc and the following stitch), * sc in next 4 sts, ch-2, sk-2 sts * repeat between * * around. Join to first sc. (240)
Rounds 22 & 23. Ch-2, do not turn, Ldc in each st around. Fasten off using Invisible Join and weave in all ends.
Make a drawstring that is approximately 53″ long. This should be almost exactly the circumference of round 21.
Feed the drawstring in and out of the holes made in round 21. When you get all the way around, join the two ends together and securely weave in all ends.
Now you are ready to carry around your cosmetics (or whatever else you fancy) in style! 💃
