Top Tier Tank | Free Crochet Pattern

The Top Tier Tank is a simple, easy-to-crochet top using just single crochet and double crochet. Available in 9 sizes, this is the perfect tank top to wear all year long. Wear it under a jacket or alone and everyone will be asking where you got that tank. Let’s make one!

Top Tier Tank

This tank top came into being because I recently finished a fresh version of the Perfect Parfait Tank with a different yarn than I originally used. It turned out great!

As I do most mornings nowadays, I woke up a 3am recently thinking about crochet… “that top tier could be its own pattern”. And so here we are… with the top tier of the Perfect Parfait tank pattern, modified for a thicker yarn (I love a fingering weight yarn but… ) and with a gorgeous trim added to the bottom. The result is fantastic!

This is a fun tank top that uses a very simple stitch: the Suzette Stitch. This stitch pattern is comprised of single crochets and double crochets, made in a way that creates a gorgeous texture. Similar to the Lemon Peel stitch, with one slight modification.

For testing and writing this pattern I used CotLin in the “Sagebrush” colorway. I love the way this cotton blend breathes for the summer heat.

For the colorful version pictured I used the Premier Colorfusion DK yarn in “Painted Desert” which I had never used before so I was unsure how it would work up… but I absolutely love it!

If you’re new to crocheting wearables, this would be the perfect beginner tank top crochet pattern to make. There is ZERO shaping in the body, and minimal shaping for the straps. Are you ready?

Materials:

DK/#3 Weight Yarn (CotLin yarn in “Sagebrush” used) and (Premier Colorfusion DK in “Painted Desert” used)
-approx. (480, 560, 640, 725, 800, 905, 970, 1085, 1140) yards

Crochet hook in size G/4mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Yarn Needle

Gauge: 14 sts x 15 rows = 4” square using the Suzette Stitch

Sizing: (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) = finished bust (31”, 35”, 39”, 43”, 47”, 51”, 55”, 59”, 63”)

Odd rows are the Right Side.

Pattern:

Round 1: Fhdc-(107, 119, 137, 149, 161, 179, 191, 209, 221), Join with a sl st to top of first hdc without twisting. Alternately you could ch-(108, 120, 138, 150, 162, 180, 192, 210, 222), hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end, join to top of first hdc. (107, 119, 137, 149, 161, 179, 191, 209, 221)

Fasten off and plot out straps as follows… when ready, start at the “front” both times.

With Right Side facing, attach in the far right stitch of the first strap with a slip stitch.

Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as st), dc in same, * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * (3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) more times. Sk next st, sc in next. (10, 10, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 14, 14)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, dc in first st. * Sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * until three sts remain. Sk next st, in last 2 sts place sc2tog. (8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12)

Row (36, 36, 38, 40, 40, 42, 42, 42, 42): Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, (sc, dc) in next st. * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * until one st remains, sc in last st. (10, 10, 12, 12, 12, 12, 14, 14, 14)

Fasten off leaving a long enough tail for seaming, and sew straps to the corresponding place on the “back”.

Neck opening:

Sc around the entire neck hole. Fasten off using Invisible Join.

Armholes:

Attach where straps meet “back”. Sc around. Fasten off using Invisible Join. Repeat on other side.

Bottom (optional):

With Right Side facing, attach near the seam at round 1. Ch-1, sc in same, * sk-2 sts, 5dc in next st, sk-2 sts, sc in next st * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first sc with a sl st. (18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 35, 37 scallops)

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
