I think my girlfriends had a secret meeting and decided to all have babies at the same time. Since I am done having babies myself this, of course, means that I get all the baby cuddles and newborn smells without the dirty diapers annnnd that I need to crochet faster. Ha! Creighton’s blanket is an extremely customizable crochet stitch sampler pattern that can be used for a baby blanket, a lapghan, or a full blown king size blanket!

Crochet Stitch Sampler Blanket Pattern

Creighton’s Blanket

To break this crochet blanket pattern into bite-sized pieces, I decided to make it two parts. In part one we will crochet the different squares (the more squares you have, the bigger the blanket) that we will then piece together in part two, along with adding the border.

Each block should be about 6″ square, depending on your gauge. These squares work up SUPER fast! Great for crocheting while watching Netflix, or listening to a free audio book! Which, by the way, if you’re listening to audio books, I invite you to join my virtual book club!

What size of Creighton’s blanket are you crocheting? This chart will tell you how many squares you’ll need…

Creighton's Blanket Crochet Pattern Size Chart

Creighton's Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern

You can mix and match the squares any way you like, for Creighton’s baby blanket I made 25 squares comprised of:

Half Double Crochet
Bobble
Crossed Double Crochet
Lemon Peel
Moss Stitch
Mini Bean
Waffle Stitch

Crochet Squares

Of course, if you’d like to throw in a few other crochet stitches into this stitch sampler blanket, use your creative license to do so! Just make sure they all end up the same size (within 1/2″) when the squares are finished. We’ll block the squares before connecting them, but it’s always nice to have the closest size as possible at any rate.

Don’t worry about the border being exactly the same number of stitches on each square, but do make sure you crochet them as evenly as possible. If you need help with adding a border to crochet, this border tutorial will help!

  1. Hello! I absolutely love this blanket. I am looking to make the baby size (25 squares - 5x5) in the blue and grey like you have done. I am struggling trying to figure out how many of each pattern type and color scheme for each. Would it be possible for you to list out the pattern used for all of the squares and color sequence you used for this blanket? And how many of each one? I am having a block as to how to make it work and look as gorgeous as the one pictured above. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
      1. Not yet. I am still waiting for a response. I have even message her on Instagram but no answer as of yet. I am going to email her. Hopefully, she will get back to me soon. I will let you know if/when I do.
      2. Good Morning Lotty. Ashlea did respond to me and, unfortunately, she does not have a graph or full picture of her blanket. She says she just plays around with the squares until she finds a set up she likes. So yesterday I decided to use her pictures above as a jumping point - I made a graph with 25 boxes and looking at the pictures figured out what patterns to put in the squares I could see. For the ones I couldn't see, I sort of guessed at. Hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!
    1. Make one square. Measure it . Then you can figure how many you need . Make a drawing with the amount of amount of squares and write colour of each square . That's what I did
  2. In the link that you added to take you to the I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, which colors did you use for your blanket?
  3. Looking forward to making this as a baby blanket I love the colors for a boy it looks like only two colors white and blue ones you have links to the color names and can you tell me how many skeins of each color you used for a baby blanket?
  4. FInally ! Someone who doesn't make you jump through hoops, endless life stories and other pages of nonsense to get to the patterns. THANK YOU!
      1. Hi Cherryl! The free version is only available here on my blog...I do have an ad-free downloadable version available on Ravelry for a small fee which can be found here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/creightons-blanket
  5. Thanks very much for the pattern! I finished my first ever blanket but I don't know how to attach it here. I will email you a picture. I can't post it on social media coz it's a surprise for my friend's grandson. It turned out beautifully.
    1. Lotty and Stacy... I don't know why you can't see what I am seeing on this pattern info, but it tells you: A 36×36 baby blanket =25 squares that are 5×5 each. A small throw is 48x54 =57 squares that are 7x8 each A large throw that is 60x72=99 squares that are9x11 each. Etc... There is all the sizes there including a full size and king. Maybe she just reposted it or maybe you might of over looked it but hope this helps. If you still can't find it and you want the bigger sizes just let me know and I will post the other 2 sizes. I am making a baby sized on for my Grandson who is due in June. Love this pattern
  6. Oh my goodness! The tutorial on how to carry up the color instead of sew in a million tails is a LIFE changer. I'm new to crochet and have shied away from all these beautiful colorful patterns because I hate sewing the tails. Thank you!!!
  7. Hi. Love the look of this blanket. Trying something similar in green and cream. Found a pattern called Houndstooth that I’d like to include. This means carrying colour across whole row to avoid lots of ends. The squares I’ve made using this pattern have a ‘tighter’ feel than other squares I’ve done. Feel this might’ve affect the ‘drape’ of the blanket. Do you have any advice/opinion about this?
  8. Thank you so much for this pattern, it was so easy to follow and I have just finished the most beautiful blanket. I have 4 (yes 4!) friends currently with bumps, although it will be hard to give this away I know one of them will LOVE it as much a I do :) xx
  9. Thankyou so much for this beautiful pattern, Im half way thru and every thing is working out perfect for me. Obviously not every square is going to be exactly the same , but once you start sewing them together they will all work out fine. Also its fairly easy to adjust your stitches as Im sure everyones tension is not the same. Thankyou again for this gorgeous tutorial which is so easy to follow.
  10. Just beautiful, thank you so much for sharing your pattern, very elegant, you are so creative. Any baby would love the textures in this blanket!
    1. I have this problem too. If I left off two rows, it would be square. But then it would be 7 squares wide by 6 high. I am wondering if blocking it will sort it out the issues. I was hoping for an answer here before I do the sc all round. Ashlea - you have a great tutorial here.
    2. Thank you for posting these patterns and tutorial videos. I finished a waffle stitch square using your pattern/tutorial. I just finished row 15 of the bobble stitch square and it came out quite smaller than the waffle stitch square. Once competed, should all Of the patterns above approximately be the same size? Are they the exact size squares shown in Creighton’s blanket picture? I also chained 20, got 19 hdc on row but for some reason my square isn’t fitting 4 bobbles. I re started several times and each time I’m coming up with the same problem. I follow exactly but never seem to fit 4 bobbles plus do the sc’s stated to do at the end. I’d love to show you a picture so you can maybe point out what I’m doing wrong. Thank you again. This is such a beautiful blanket.
  11. Hi I have loads of grey double knit yarn left over from a previous blanket I made and a 4mm crochet hook, could I do the squares with this combination of yarn and hook but the end result will be just smaller squares?
  12. Hello! Love the look of your blue and silver blanket! Do you have a picture of the blanket laying flat so I can see how you paired the squares/what order toy out them in? It would be great to see the overall blanket!
    1. Hi Elsa! Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the whole blanket laid out. But, the beauty of stitch sampler blankets like this, is that you can make them your own by putting the squares in whatever order/pattern your creative mind desires!
  13. The page with the pictures and the pattern below will every square be the same size? Also I would love if you posted a video of you putting the SC border on the specific pattern on this page.
  14. I first saw the crossed double crochet stitch in the Walled Garden granny square pattern, and was delighted to see it here. While you use seven patterns, I'm going to make an afghan using four: the crossed double crochet, the half-double, the lemon peel, and possibly the Moss. Is it the Moss that you used for the blue and white in Creighton's blanket? I found the other three too complicated. I'll make about 35 squares, alternating blue and white, similar to what you have done. I hope it brightens the day for a patient at the local nursing home. Thank you for your inspiration.
    1. Hi Alice! Yes, the blue/white striped square is the Moss Stitch. I am sure your blanket will brighten anyone's day! Happy crocheting!
  15. Thank you for your descriptive tutorials with this blanket pattern. grandson 2 asked me if I could have a go at making this for their new baby boy. I am self taught in crochet so your tutorials are fantastic. Xxxxx Happy Great grand mummie from Aussie
    1. Hi Ruth! If you use a DK yarn your squares will end up smaller since it's a thinner yarn...I would either add stitches and rows to each square to make them 6" OR make enough extra squares to have another row and column. Hope this helps!
  16. I really love the look of this pattern. I'm working on a bunch of squares right now. On the bobble stitch square, mine keeps coming out a bit slanted. Where am I going wrong? Am I stitching it too tight? Or are certain stitches too tight going to cause this? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!
    1. Hi Jenny! Don't fret! My bobble squares were slightly slanted as well...blocking them will help tremendously. Hope this helps!
  17. Hi! I love this pattern and will make for grand-baby! I cannot get to “part two” however. . Could you please provide me with a link? The pattern has a place to go to “part two” but it is t linking Thanks in advance!
    1. Hi Melissa! Sorry for the link trouble...here's the link if you still need it: https://hearthookhome.com/creightons-blanket-pattern-part-two/
      1. Hi. I am making the bobble square. For some reason I add stitches. On row 3 I end with around 23 stitches instead of 19. Thank you
        1. Hi Lynn! You should have 4 bobbles on each bobble row, if that helps at all. I do have a tutorial for this stitch...if you haven't checked it out, you can find it here: https://hearthookhome.com/how-to-crochet-bobble-stitch/
  18. I would like to make the exact project you did using the blue and silver. Can you tell me how many squares you made in each color of each stitch? I have tried counting in the picture and just can’t get it right :) thanks!
    1. Hi Helen! I do have the ad-free version available for purchase which can be found here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/creightons-blanket
  19. Hey so this is absolutely one of the most beautiful afghans I have seen. Can you tell me what colors you used in the orange and blue? They are amazing.
  20. Hellow, I am in love with this blanket and I am attempting it for a friend who is due in Dec. However, I have a problem while blocking, I am almost done but for example the crossed double crochet after blocking seems to have big gaps and doesnt look as per the picture and most of my squares after blocking seem to have this problem they seem very stretched. I am using a yarn with cotton and acrylic blend and used the wetting method to block. Also I am dont know what is the weight of my yarn. Really appreciate your help.
  21. I am making the king size blanket. Should my squares still be 6” or should I make them the bigger 13x15 size?
    1. Hi Melissa! You will be making 6" squares...the 13x15 is just indicating that you will have 13 squares across and 15 squares down. Hope that helps!
  22. Absolutely love this blanket and colors (the blue and silver) however when I click the link for the yarn used, it just brings me to the Michael's website. Could you tell me what yarn and colors were used for the blue and silver blanket? Thanks :)
  23. Good afternoon. I went to the instagram link and didn't find a picture of the finished baby afghan. I love this pattern and want to make it for my grandson who is expected in October. Could you possibly post a picture of the blue and gray baby afghan flat on here? or if email is easier that would be fine also :-) I would like to replicate the one in the pictures posted here. Thank you VERY much, Colin
  24. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work. I do bags and like you I have not done one for me as yet. As I make them I get them sold. Thanks again.
  25. Hi Miss Ashlee, I was wondering on the lemon peel stitch, in your tutorial you say to always do an even amount but in your written pattern you start with 19...is that a typo or are we just alternating between ending with singles and doubles? Thank you, Anne
    1. Also, the lemon peel is coming up about a row bigger, does it matter since we're blocking them or should I only do 15 rows, did you notice this happening as well? Thanks again, Anne
  26. I just love this blanket, the name, the colors, everything about it. How do I save the pattern? Thank you, Beth Bowers
  27. Love this! I added a basket weave square to the mix :) Can’t wait to see them all together and put the border on.
  28. I absolutely love this pattern! I want to make two baby boy blankets. I have a grandson and a great nephew being born at the same time. Please keep me posted for the whole pattern.
  29. Hello Ashlea , just have to say I love this blanket pattern and intend to start it straight away (once I have purchased the wool - going to use same colours as yours as it looks just fab). Please can I just check that part 2 is to follow - in other words I'm not missing a link on this page. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work!
  30. Awesome! I love the blanket, can't wait to start. I know exactly what yarn I'm going to use, just have to finish the other 4 blankets on my hooks! Love your design and projects. Thank you!!
  31. I don’t have an Instagram account so is there any other way to see the rest of the pictures? Also you said on th live you went around each square when you finished, do you just slip stitch around or what? Thanks.
    1. Hi! You shouldn't need an Instagram account to view the pictures...if you just click the link in the post it should take you straight to my Instagram pics. I went around each square with a single crochet border. Hope that helps!
  32. Hey! What a lovely blanket!! I will be thinking of it long after I write this message. I also love the fact you added additional photos of the squares in contrasting colours. It would be easier to put in older photos of projects with the same stitch, but you didn't and I appreciate that!! Nicely done!!
  33. This pattern is just in time for a friends' daughter who is expecting in September :) I just got my invitation in the mail for the shower in a couple weeks and I'm getting started on this. Super excited!! Thanks Ashlea! As I often say-YOU ARE THE CROCHET QUEEN!!!
  34. Hi Ashlea. Quick question on the cross double I keep ending with a left over chain. I've counted it out so many times. Any clue what I may be doing wrong?
        1. Oh my gosh you guys! I found the problem. Eeeep! Thank you for pointing it out, I've updated row 1, so that should solve it. Sorry about that!
    1. Hi there! You're starting the first row with a single dc on each end, then alternating each row to stagger them. Does that help?
    1. Hello Joyce, I will have the pdf available as soon as I compile the squares I'm making now and add the border. Thank you!
    1. Hi Marlene! I'll be adding the pdf pattern to Ravelry as soon as I compile these squares and add the border (with photos). Hopefully very soon!
        1. Hi Christina! Yes, you can find it on ravelry here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/creightons-blanket
  35. YES!!! Even though I've known the most basic stitches roughly forever and a day, just in the past year or so have I had the time to branch out and try new (to me) stitches. This blanket is wonderful, very pretty, and will teach me a lot. I can't wait to try it, BUT I am 2 days into my first Hedonist's Housecoat, so... blanket will need to wait just a bit. LOL Story of my crochet life!! Thanks, Ashlea!!
    1. Ha! That's okay!! I'm excited to make a larger version of the baby blanket for my couch! Seems like I hardly ever make anything for me. Hee hee
