Denim jackets are all the rage. In fact, everything 90’s seems to be making a comeback lately. I’m in love with all things crochet, so adding a detachable crocheted hood to a denim jacket is the perfect melding of hip and style.

Do you also love the look of a colorful detachable hood? Denim goes with anything, and adding a colorful hood to your jacket takes something old and transforms it into something new and awesome!

We will crochet a hood that will fit the width of most collars of most jean jackets. Then we’ll add buttons to the collar of said jacket and use them to attach using the crocheted buttonholes. This really is a very quick, fun project!

Come to think of it… I bet these would sell like hotcakes at craft fairs! Combine the hood with the drawstring and the necessary buttons as a kit. See more on selling at craft fairs here.

I have written this pattern to include TWO sets of instructions. One using fingering weight yarn and another version using worsted weight yarn. I am using a thin cotton from Hobbii for the first because I love the colors and the lightness of the hood as a result, but you could use Dishie cotton, or an acrylic worsted weight yarn like Brava (pictured here in black), Premier yarns, Mary Maxim yarns, or other yarns like Red Heart, etc and follow the worsted weight pattern instead.

To crochet this detachable hood we are using the Flat Granny stitch. This stitch is worked in rows back and forth in the traditional Granny Stitch method of three double crochets in one space.

  1. Hi. I love the concept of your hood. I am a pretty seasoned crocheter - but am confused. Firstly: where you stipulate in Row 1 or 2 to repeat 3dc/ch1 4x’s at end of row. That will round off the end - that’s done when doing something like a slipper. Nonetheless I did what the pattern calls for . Also, I am not coming out with the stated number of clusters/ch-spa. This is my 4th attempt! Any suggestions. Too cute to forget about. Thank you.
    1. Hi Barbara! I am sorry you struggling with this! If you could send an email to sarah@hearthookhome.com, she can try to help you get on track...and if you could send a pic of what you've got, that could help alot!
  2. With a lot of kids. I am enjoying crocheting like I learned as a kid when I was about 8. I find it a very calming craft and easy to take almost anywhere.
  3. Dear Ashley, This is a wonderful pattern. I will use it multiple times, especially for Christmas. Now do the sleeves! er...please.
