12 month size crochet hoodie free crochet pattern

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn
-approx. 450 yards for 12/18M
Stitch markers
Crochet hook in size J/6mm

Gauge: 11 hdc and 10 rows in 4” square

Pattern Notes:

Fhdc = Foundation Half Double Crochet

Fphdc/Bphdc = Front Post (or Back Post) Half Double Crochet

Buttonholes are unnecessary. Any ⅜” buttons will fit through any opening on the edging should you choose to add them.

12 Month Crochet Hoodie Pattern

SIZE 12/18M:

Row 1: Fhdc-62. Alternately you could… Ch-63, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. (62)

Rows 2 – 24: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (62)

ARMHOLES:

Mark 18 stitches in from each side with stitch markers.

LEFT PANEL:

Row 25: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 18 sts only. (18)

Rows 26 – 38: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (18) DO NOT fasten off. Leave attached for starting hood.

CENTER PANEL:

Attach yarn in same st as stitch marker.
Row 25: Ch-1, hdc in same st and next 27 sts. (28)

Rows 26 – 38: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (28) Fasten off leaving ~20” tail for sewing later.

RIGHT PANEL:

Attach yarn in same st as stitch marker.
Row 25: Ch-1, hdc in same st and remaining 17 sts. (18)

Rows 26 – 38: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (18) Fasten off leaving ~20” tail for sewing later.

SEW SHOULDERS:

Fold front sides in and line up top edges to sew shoulders. Starting at the outside, use the long tails from “right panel” and “center panel” to sew using the Mattress Stitch.

Sew shoulders for 9 stitches per side. You should have 9 stitches left on each “front” and 10 stitches along the “neck” for a total of 28 stitches.

HOOD:

Where still attached from “left panel”.
Row 1: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 9 sts. Hdc2tog (using the last two sewn sts from shoulder seam). Hdc in 10 “neck” sts, hdc2tog (using the last two sewn sts from shoulder steam). Hdc in last 9 sts. (30)

Rows 2 – 17: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (30)

Mark two centermost stitches. Move markers up each row or just line up decreases by eye.
Rows 18 – 22: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to marker. Hdc2tog, hdc in each st to end. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold right sides together and sew the top of hood using Mattress Stitch.

EDGING:

Attach yarn in bottom right corner.
Row 1: Ch-1, hdc in each row end up to hood, hdc in peak of hood and down the other side, making sure to place one hdc per row end. (121)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, hdc in first st. * bphdc around next st, fphdc around next st * repeat between * * around. Bphdc around second to last st, hdc in last. (121)

Row 3: Ch-1, turn, hdc in first st. * fphdc around next st, bphdc around next * repeat between * * around. Fphdc around second to last st, hdc in last. (121)

Row 4: repeat row 2 (and if desired, add additional edging rows in multiples of two)

Row 5: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. Do not fasten off. (121)

Bottom edge: Turn work clockwise. 3sc in corner st, sc in each row end/st around entire bottom. 3sc in last /corner st. Fasten off with invisible join.

SLEEVES:

Looking at the outside, attach yarn in bottom of armhole.
Row 1: Ch-1, hdc 28x evenly around opening. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (28)

Rows 2 – 3: Ch-1, turn. Hdc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (28)

Row 4: Ch-1, turn. Hdc in all but last 2 sts, hdc2tog. Join to top of first st with sl st. (27)

Row 5: Ch-1, turn. Hdc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (27)

Row 6: Ch-1, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (26)

Row 7: Ch-1, turn. Hdc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (26)

Row 8: repeat row 4 (25)

Row 9: repeat row 5 (25)

Row 10: repeat row 6 (24)

Row 11: repeat row 7 (24)

Row 12: repeat row 4 (23)

Rows 13 – 18: repeat row 5 (23)

Row 19: Ch-1, turn. * fphdc around first st, bphdc around next * repeat between * * around. Fphdc around last, join to top of first fphdc with sl st. (23)

Row 20: Ch-1, turn. * bphdc around first st, fphdc around next * repeat between * * around. Bphdc around last, join to top of first bphdc with sl st. (23)

Row 21: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st around. Join with Invisible Join. (23)

  1. Hi Ashley, I’m making the 12 month size PCC. Without sewing the shoulders, I have 15 inches from shoulder to bottom. It looks too long, is it? It measures 20” in circumference already without the edging. Plus, I watched your video because I was wondering about those extra stitches on the front shoulder sections. I didn’t notice any on the one you did with the Mandala yarn. Is there another video to see it actually coming together, slowly..lol Thank you

    1. Hi Susan! It sounds like your measurements are spot on...and the increases on the left and right panels are simply to give more of a lapel for the hood to be attached to...babies tend to have proportionately larger heads, so we added a few more lapel stitches on the 12 month size to give a little more hood room. Hope this makes sense and helps!

  9. Could someone please explain what the increases are for on the shoulder section of the 12m size? I'm a leftie; when I fold this in the bump from the increases will be toward the center. Seems like this is going to mess up the edge and edging? Did I read things wrong and put them on the wrong end? Seems like they're correct, from the comments. Thanks!

  17. I started the 2T size with an I hook for my 1 yr granddaughter and it was way too big for her. I will put it away for when she gets bigger. I started the 12 mo. With a K hook and will see how that turns out. I also plan on making 3 more adult sizes since I really love this pattern. So simple and easy!

  21. Hello I am doing the 12 months for my great grandson I'm almost finished with the sleeves it doesn't say when you switch to the edging color so is the last 4 rows the fphdc and bphdc for the edging on the sleeves ?

  23. I made a 6 month old one, no problem. Starred a size 2/3 and it ended up way to big. Inside from arm pit ended up 15" long and I need it to 9". Tore it all out, restarted, did the gauge. Thought I'd try a 12 month, he's 2, but he's very small. Used a size J hook, 11 stitched ends up at like 3". So then I used a "k" hook. 11 stitched ended up at 4", but when I got the 10 rows on it, it ended up at around 5 1/2". I'm so confused. I want to make one for my grandson, to match his little sisters.

If the base is 56, and you mark 15st on each side, you are only left with 26 stitches. This has you starting in the 15th marker on the right, going 27st, adding one in the other marker... I am not good at math! Admittedly. Can you explain? Thanks!

  27. Could thou tell me if the increases on the front. Pieces near the shoulders are on the ends towards the outsides or to the middle? I'm left handed so sometimes trying to reverse directions throws Mr offs. Thanks!

  31. I absolutely love this pattern! However, I just made the 6 month for a coworker and it is more like a 3-4 month size?? I dont want to go all the way up to a 12 month because her granddaughter really is a small little thing. Do you think going up to a K hook will remedy the problem? It doesn't fit around her and the sleeves are too short. I can fix the sleeves part by a more rows there but not sure if you think a K hook will be too open with a 4 weight yarn.

      1. I did the swatch but I think my problem is, even though the yarn said it was a size 4, it's a thin sleek size 4. I'm going to make a toddler 2-4 today with red heart and see how that works up. Still love the pattern! Thank you!

    2. I just made a size 2/3toddler in this. My grandbabes is 20 months she’s very tall but very thin! I went down a size in hook to a size I. It came out perfect! Love it!! And the pattern was easy to follow and well explained. I can’t wait to make one for me next! And another for her!

    2. Hi I purchased your adult pattern sizes on etsy. Trying to make size 10/12. I am having trouble figuring out how many rows for the body (I believe I need 56 rows) and how many rows for the panels (I believe 24 rows?) I believe it's suppose to have 80 rows with both parts together. Sorry I am new to this
