Yard Dice Crochet Pattern

Yard Dice is a fun way to play classic table games on a MEGA size. Grab your biggest mixing bowl or a bucket to roll the dice, or grab them all in your hands before throwing them and seeing how they land.

This is the NINTH installment of the 2026 Toy & Game Series. I can not believe that we only have a few more left! This year has been full of awesome crochet projects that bring fun to our lives, or sharpness to our minds. We’ve had a Toy Net Hammock, Poker Chips, Puzzle Sorter Bowls, Board Game Pouches, Golf club covers, a Memory game, a soccer ball, and a Tic-Tac-Toe board. What a great way to spend our time crocheting!

These fun crocheted Yard Dice are made using 4″ foam blocks meant for a foam pit. They come in just the right size, and we crochet covers for them and glue on felt circles. How cool are these?! I found the foam cubes in a pack of 10 online for a very reasonable price. I used Dishie cotton yarn I had on hand as well. You could make 6 different colored die for your set as a mix-and-match or scrap yarn project. How fun is that?!

Yard Dice typically come in a set of six. You can make as many or as few as you like. You could do the full 10 dice if you grab the same foam cubes I did. Keep 5 for yourself and give 5 to a friend or sell the others as a separate set.

Since each die is a cube that has 6 sides, we need 6 of the crocheted squares per die. The square made for this pattern is super easy and is only 5 rounds – awesome!

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton (one cone of Dishie is enough to make all six die!)
-approx. (115) yards per die
–Dishie Cotton yarn in “Fiesta” used

Crochet hook in size 4mm or size needed to obtain gauge

4″ Foam pit cubes (at least 6 – like these)

Yarn needle

3/4″ Felt circles

Fabric Glue

Gauge: Squares are approx. 4” wide

Sizing: Each die is approx. 4″ cube

Round 1: Magic circle, ch-1, 10dc in circle. Join to top of first dc. (10)

Round 2: Ch-1, 2dc in each st around. *I find it helpful here to crochet around the yarn tail in this round so we don’t have to weave it in later* Join to top of first dc. (20)

Round 3: Ch-2, (Tr, 2dc) in same as join, * dc in next 4 sts, (2dc, Tr, 2dc) in next st * repeat between * * 2 more times. dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in same as first sts. Join to top of first dc. (36)

Round 4: Ch-2, (Tr, 2dc) in same as join, * dc in next 8 sts, (2dc, Tr, 2dc) in next st * repeat between * * 2 more times. dc in next 8 sts, 2dc in same as first sts. Join to top of first dc. (52)

Round 5: Ch-1, sc in each st around, placing 3sc in each corner st. Join using Invisible Join.

Simply feed the yarn toward the center of the square, no need for fancy weaving in ends. We’ll tuck them all in during assembly.

Construction:

Remember to always have the “Right Side” facing out, and seam your squares.

You could use the whip stitch to seam the squares around the cube, but I chose to slip stitch each seam using those inside loops only, inserting the foam block when necessary toward the end. Tuck in all of the yarn tails from making the squares.

When you’re finished seaming your squares and the foam has been encapsulated, weave in any remaining yarn tails. Grab your felt circles and your fabric glue. Position them on, and glue them down so that you have the numbers 1 through 6 represented, one on each face of the die. The 1 goes opposite the 6, the 4 goes opposite the 3 and the 5 goes opposite the 2.

Once you have six of these puppies and the glue has dried, it’s time to play some Yard Dice games! What color will you make yours?
