Do you love crocheting blankets and afghans for different holidays, but in bite-sized pieces? Then a Holiday Stitch Sampler blanket is for you! Grab your hook and yarn and let’s work up a Holiday Sparkle Stitch Mix blanket using this gorgeous sparkly yarn!

Holiday Sparkle Stitch Mix Blanket Crochet Along
There’s something about this sparkly yarn that I just adore. I made an entire Halloween blanket using it and I loved making it so much that I am starting over with a HOLIDAY version as well! ❄️⛄

I’m usually not much of a sparkly or sequin person. In fact, I can’t remember the last thing I crocheted with sparkle yarn. But this yarn? This Holiday Sparkle Worsted 8? I can’t help myself. It’s GORGEOUS and will make for a beautiful throw!

If you too love this sparkle yarn (available in Halloween/Fall colorways OR in Holiday colorways), make a Holiday Sparkle Stitch Mix Blanket with me! Starting October 15th, we’ll crochet these beautiful colors into a holiday themed throw perfect for all of the chilly nights this season. Keep reading for more info.

For this Holiday Stitch Mix throw I ordered a total of ELEVEN Herrschners Worsted 8 acrylic yarn skeins. Each skein has 489 yards meaning that if you order the same quantity of yarn as I did, we’ll each have 5,379 yards of Holiday fiber goodness to crochet up a stitch mix blanket to cuddle up underneath while opening presents this holiday.

This blanket is going to be the go-to blanket in my house between the months of November and February. I just know it! Here’s what I have for my blanket…

If you want to change the sized of your blanket, or order more yarn, the squares needed for each of the sizes are listed below. Crochet as many of these squares as you like! The 12″ squares range in yardage from as little as ~120 yards to as many as ~180 yards a piece. They average 150 yards per square, and you’ll want anywhere from 500 – 1000 yards for the border, depending on how large the blanket.

Grab the ad-free, printable version of this pattern on Ravelry, Etsy, or right here in the Heart Hook Home Blog Shop. Thank you!

Crochet hook in size I/5.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge: 14 sts in 4″ width using Double Crochet
Pattern Notes:
Patterns written using US terms.
The ch(s) at the beginning of each row do NOT count unless otherwise stated.
FLO = Front Loop Only
It is ideal for all squares to be slightly under 12″ so that we can block them all to the same size. Within half an inch (1 cm) or so is best. If you need to add another border row to get to that range, that’s perfectly fine! It’s better for your finished square to be a bit too small than too large. You can always add one more border round to get it to size.
There will be ten (10) 12″ square patterns included, with the stitches used strategically selected to ensure we’ll have maximum yardage left over for a nice, chunky border.
We will start crocheting on October 15th. Each day I walk 6 miles at the park while I crochet. I will take my yarn for the square with me, we’ll talk about the stitch, and crochet on it together. I am allotting myself two days’ worth of walking time for each square. I am making thirty squares, so that will take sixty days! If all goes to plan (I don’t walk outside when it’s below ~40 degrees F (4 Celsius) or raining, so hopefully we have pleasant mornings!), that means I should finish my thirtieth square on or around December 14th.
Then we’ll assemble our squares together, add a border and finish by the end of the year! I am so excited to crochet this with you! I will add new squares to this blog post as I start crocheting them, every two days.

I am keeping a running tally of my squares and the colors here, that I update each time I add a square. I am making 30 squares total:

Tutorials list:

Square Pattern #1 – C2C Moss Stitch Square
Here is a full tutorial for the C2C Moss Stitch. For this square I used about 155 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, simply stop growing when needed.
Row 1: Magic Circle, Ch-3, sc in circle.
Row 2: Ch-3, turn, (sc, ch-1, sc) in ch-sp from previous row.
Row 3: Ch-3, turn, sk-first sc and (sc, ch-1) in next ch-sp, (sc, ch-1, sc) in beg-ch of previous row. Pull the beginning tail tight and continue on.
Rows 4 – 37 (or until width reaches ~11.5″): Ch-3, turn, sk-first sc and (sc, ch-1) in each chain space across, (sc, ch-1, sc) in the space of the beginning chain of the previous row.
Row 38: Ch-3, turn, sk-first sc and (sc, ch-1) in each chain space across. When you get to the end, sc in the beginning chain of the previous row without placing a chain in between.
Rows 39 – end (when only 2 sts remain): Ch-2, turn, sk-first two sts, sc in next space, * chain one, skip the next stitch, and sc in the next chain space * Repeat between * * until you have only one stitch remaining. Place one sc in the beginning chain of the previous row. (again, you should have two scs in a row without a chain between)
Finishing: Ch-1, turn, sc in the beginning chain of the previous row.
Border: Do not turn, but rotate clockwise. Sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner. Sc in each st/sp to end, 3sc in corner. Sc evenly up row ends, 3sc in corner. Sc in each st to end 2sc in last st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #2 – Star Stitch Square
Here is a full tutorial for the Star Stitch. For this square I used about 160 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in multiples of TWO.
Row 1: Ch-49, Pull up a loop in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th chains from the hook (6 loops on hook). YO (Yarn Over), pull through all 6 loops, chain one to close the stitch. Star st across until only one st remains. Lhdc using eye of final star and final st. (22 stars)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, Hdc in first st, 2hdc in each “eye” across, hdc in final st. (46)
Row 3: Ch-3, turn, Star st using the 2nd and 3rd chain and the first 3 sts (6 loops on hook), YO, pull through all 6 loops, ch-1 to close the st. Star st across until only one st remains. Lhdc using eye of final star and final st. (22 Stars)
Row 4: repeat row 2 (46)
Rows 5 through 28 (or until square and ending on an even numbered row): repeat rows 3 & 4
Border: Ch-1, turn, (so that you are again looking at the “right side”) and sc in each st across, 3sc in corner. Sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner. Sc in each st across, 3sc in corner. Sc evenly up row ends and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #3 – Ribbed Square
There is not a full tutorial for this stitch, but it’s simply Half Double Crochet and Single Crochet stitches. For this square I used about 142 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in ANY multiple of stitches.
Row 1: Ch-41, Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end. (40)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, sc in the third loop only of each Hdc across. (40)
Row 3: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st across. (40)
Rows 4 through 37: alternate previous two rows.
Border: Ch-1, rotate (do not turn), sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across, 3sc in corner. Sc evenly up row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across, and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #4 – Trinity Square
There is a full tutorial for the Trinity Stitch, and I think you’ll really like it! For this square I used about 143 yards. Note that for this square I wish I had started with more chains, so I am making that edit to the pattern below. That being said, if you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in multiples of TWO stitches.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook.
Row 1: Ch-46, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc3tog using same as last sc and next two chs, * ch-1, sc3tog using same as last st and next 2 chs * repeat between * * until no chs remain. Sc in same as last st. (45)
Rows 2 through 37 (or until square and ending on an odd numbered row): Ch-1, turn, sc in first st, sc3tog using same as last st, top of next st, and next ch, * ch-1, sc3tog using same as last st, top of next st, and next ch-sp * repeat between * * to end. Sc in same as last st. (45)
Border: Do not turn, but rotate clockwise. Sc evenly down to corner, 3sc in corner. Sc in each st across, 3sc in corner. Sc evenly up row ends, 3sc in corner. Sc across, 2sc in same as first st. Join to top of first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off using Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #5 – Linked Square
There is not yet a full tutorial for this stitch, but it is alternating Linked Treble Crochet and Single Crochet stitches. If you are new to this stitch, you could follow along with the Linked Double Crochet tutorial and do more rows as needed to get the square to size. For this square I used about 152 yards.
Fsc = Foundation Single Crochet
Ltr = Linked Treble Crochet. Pull up a loop in the first vertical bar of the previous stitch, pull up a loop in the second vertical bar of the previous stitch, pull up a loop in the next stitch (4 loops on hook) Yarn Over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through two loops.

Row 1: Fsc-44 (alternately you could ch-45, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end). (44)
Row 2: Ch-3, turn, Ltr using 2nd and 3rd ch and first st. Ltr across. (44)
Row 3: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (44)
Rows 4 through 26 (or until square and ending on an even numbered row): alternate previous two rows. (44)

Square Pattern #6 – Counterpane Square
This one is a NEW stitch to Heart Hook Home! Head on over and watch the full tutorial if needed. This one is similar to the Moss Stitch and fun to make. For this square I used about 124 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. You will also need a 4mm hook for this square. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in multiples of TWO stitches.

Using the 4mm hook…
Row 1: Ch-51, Esc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch-1, sk-next ch, Esc in next * repeat between * * to end. (49)
Switch to the 5.5mm hook for the remainder of square…
Row 2: Ch-1 (does not count as a stitch), turn, sc in first st, Esc in next ch-sp, * ch-1, sk-next st, Esc in next ch-sp * repeat between * * until only one st remains, sc in final st. (49)
Row 3: Ch-2 (does not count as a stitch), turn, Esc in first st, * ch-1, sk-next st, Esc in next ch-sp * repeat between * * until only two sts remain. Ch-1, sk-next st, Esc in final st. (49)
Row 4: Ch-1, turn, sc in first st, Esc in next ch-sp, * ch-1, sk-next st, Esc in next ch-sp * repeat between * * until only one st remains, sc in final st. (49)
Row 5: Ch-2, turn, Esc in first st, * ch-1, sk-next st, Esc in next ch-sp * repeat between * * until only two sts remain. Ch-1, sk- next st, Esc in final st. (49)
Rows 6 through 37 (or until square and ending on an odd numbered row): alternate rows 4 & 5
Border: Switch back to the 4mm hook for the border… Ch-1, turn, sc in each st and sp across, 3sc in corner, sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner. Sc in each st and sp across, 3sc in corner, sc evenly up row ends and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #7 – Snowflake Popcorn Square
Wanna save this for later?
If you love popcorns, you’ll LOVE this square! There is a tutorial for the Popcorn stitch if needed. The most important thing in this square is to make sure that as you make your popcorns they are all popping out on the correct/same side of the fabric. For this square I used about 170 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. I do think I might bump down to a 5mm for the other two Snowflake Popcorn Squares I will make for my blanket. It will help to tighten things up a bit and we can always add another row of border if needed to get it to size.
Pop = Popcorn = 4dc in same stitch, remove hook, insert hook in first dc made (front to back or back to front, depending on “right side” or “wrong side”) and pull working loop through to close the stitch.
Because this is a graph, and is not easily modifiable, if you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, you’re going to have to get creative. You can either go down a hook size if it is too large, or add more of a border if it is too small. Ready?
Here is the graph for this square:

And here is the written pattern for this square:
Row 1: Ch-38, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end. (37)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, hdc, Pop, hdc, Pop, hdc, Pop, hdc in 12 sts, Pop, hdc in 12 sts, Pop, hdc, Pop, hdc, Pop, hdc. (37)
Row 3: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 16 sts, Pop, hdc in 3 sts, Pop, hdc in 16 sts. (37)
Row 4: Ch-1, turn, hdc, Pop, hdc in all but last two sts, Pop, hdc in last. (37)
Row 5: Ch-1, turn, hdc in 4 sts, Pop, hdc in 11 sts, Pop, hdc in 3 sts, Pop, hdc in 11 sts, Pop, hdc in 4 sts. (37)
Row 6: Ch-1, turn, hdc in first, Pop, hdc in 10 sts, Pop, hdc in 11, Pop, hdc in 10 sts, Pop, hdc in last. (37)

Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #8 – Basketweave Square
This one is a NEW stitch to Heart Hook Home! Head on over and watch the full tutorial if needed. For this square I used about 180 yards.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in multiples of SIX stitches. Remember that it is easier to add more of a border to a too-small square than it is to work with a too-large square.
Fpdc (Front Post Double Crochet) tutorial here
Bpdc (Back Post Double Crochet) tutorial here
Row 1: Fdc-41 (or ch-43, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each to end). (41)
Row 2: Ch-2, turn, dc in first st, Fpdc around each of the next 3 sts, * Bpdc around next 3 sts, Fpdc around next 3 sts * repeat between * * until one st remains, dc in final st. (41)
Row 3: Ch-2, turn, dc in first st, Bpdc around each of next 3 sts, * Fpdc around next 3 sts, Bpdc around next 3 sts * repeat between * * until one st remains, dc in final st. (41)
Row 4: repeat row 3
Row 5: repeat row 2
Rows 6 through 29: repeat row 3, 3, 2 in order
Row 30: repeat row 3
Border: Ch-1, rotate (do not turn), sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across, 3sc in corner, sc evenly up row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #9 – Herringbone Square
The Herringbone stiches are gorgeous and can be fun to make. You can do either the Herringbone Single Crochet (the most difficult to learn and to crochet, but there is a NEW tutorial here!) or you can do the Herringbone Half Double Crochet or the Herringbone Double Crochet.
For the Herringbone Single Crochet square I used about 136 yards.
Hbsc = Herringbone Single Crochet= insert hook into left leg of previous st, insert hook into next open stitch (3 loops on hook), YO pull through all three loops.
rSc = Reverse Single Crochet = Single crochet made on the “Right Side” while looking at the “Wrong Side” of the fabric.
rHbsc = Reverse Herringbone Single Crochet = Herringbone Single crochet made on the “Right Side” while looking at the “Wrong Side” of the fabric.
For all squares in this blanket we are using the I/5.5mm hook. If you need to adjust the width of this square to be just shy of 12″, add or remove from the beginning chain in ANY multiple of stitches.
Note that if you decide to use Herringbone Hdc or Herringbone Dc, you may need to adjust the width of your square.
Row 1: Ch-45, sc in 2nd ch from hook, Hbsc in each ch to end. (44)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, rSc in first st, rHbsc in each st across. (44)
Row 3: Ch-1, turn, sc in first st, Hbsc in each st across. (44)
Rows 4 through 31: alternate previous two rows
Border: Ch-1, rotate (do not turn), sc evenly down row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across, 3sc in corner, sc evenly up row ends, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.

Square Pattern #10 – Apache Tears Crochet Stitch
The Apache Tears crochet stitch is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for a scrap yarn square. Grab your yarn scraps and follow along with the NEW tutorial here!
BLO = Back Loop Only
FLO = Front Loop Only
For this scrap square I used about 155 yards. Crochet around the yarn tails (beginning and ending, as in the tutorial here) to eliminate having to weave in the ends. The ch-1 used to attach each yarn color does not count as a stitch.
Row 1: Ch-43, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
*change colors here and every row, in the same color sequence each time.
Row 2: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of each st across. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 3: repeat row 2 (42)
Row 4: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first 3 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until three sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 5: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first 4 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until two sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 6: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first 5 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until one st remains. Sc in BLO of remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 7: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until seven sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 8: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until six sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 9: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first st, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until five sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Row 10: Attach in side of first row, ch-1, sc in BLO of first two sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down, * sc in BLO of next 6 sts, Tr in FLO of st three rows down * repeat between * * until four sts remain. Sc in BLO of each remaining st. Fasten off leaving a ~6″ long tail. (42)
Rows 11 through 38: repeat rows 4 – 10 in order
Row 39: repeat row 4
Row 40: repeat row 5
Border: Ch-1, rotate (do not turn), sc one time in each row end across, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across, 3sc in corner, sc one time in each row end across, 3sc in corner, sc in each st across and 2sc in last st. Join to first st. If desired, do one more row of single crochets around the border to clean things up or to get the square to size. Fasten off with Invisible Join.
Assembly:
For assembly I am using the technique that I used in this similar blanket. Since I’m using black yarn for joining the squares on this blanket I am not going to attempt to share photos. It’s hard to see in real life, much less in a photo! Here is the video tutorial for How to Join Crochet Squares, or you can watch it on YouTube here. Be sure to subscribe while you’re there!
